VIVA LAS VEGAS

Here we come!!!!

10:17 PM | link | up| archives |

i can deal with

it being partly cloudy in Las Vegas, but it's the temperatures that make me VERY giddy!

Wed Mar 26 Partly Cloudy/Wind 80°/58°
Thu Mar 27 Partly Cloudy/Wind 69°/52°
Fri Mar 28 Partly Cloudy 71°/52°
Sat Mar 29 Partly Cloudy 78°/53°
Sun Mar 30 Partly Cloudy 83°/55°

Getting out some of the summer clothes finally! Now if only upon our return the weather would decide to change here in Boston.

i'm happy

that FNX (101.7) has changed their format to alternative rock...finally there is a decent radio station in Boston again. I was really bemoaning the fate of music in this town but someone has seen the light!

We picked up our rings today but for some reason the pictures I am trying to take keep coming out blurry. Grrrr. They look so beautiful though! It's wonderful to think that in three days we'll be wearing them for real!

Tomorrow will be hectic--Joe's friend is coming over at ten AM to conduct some sort of sports marketing study using him as the subject, then he needs to finish up his paper while I spend my time packing, running to get the strap on my sandals fixed, and making sure that we're all ready to go. I begrudgingly opted out of class...I had planned on going but in the end realized that I would be extremely stressed out and if there was one thing that planning a Vegas wedding was supposed to do was to relieve us of stress! Thank god I read a mile a minute and can catch up with the readings pretty easily.

The bruises are nearly gone on my ankles...and I tried on my dress today--let me say that I ended up not being able to wear the silvery sparkle dress...the glitter on the top was scratching my arms to hell after five minutes of wearing it while trying to find the right shoes before hemming it last weekend, so I decided to wear my black velvet gown with a new wrap and this gorgeous black velvet heels...I'll take the dress back and Paulette will end up buying me a handbag instead (thanks hon!)--when I tried on my dress and shoes though, you couldn't even really see the bruises, which is awesome! Wearing shorts might be a different story though...the one on my knee is still quite dark, and the other knee has the strange red papery scab as a result of the burn on the way down the stairs. I honestly think the witch hazel has helped though. I typically keep bruises for long periods of time and these seem to be fading faster than expected. Still slow, but faster. My elbow looks dirty, strangely enough, with its grey-yellow bruise that encompasses and circles it.

We had dinner at one of my favorite little places, Matt Murphy's Pub in Brookline. We keep talking about taking my friend Sharyl and her hubby with us, but we never seem to be able to coordinate times! They have the most amazing, homey Irish food. It's tiny but the atmosphere (gloriously smoke free) is cozy and the staff is very friendly and inviting. I shouldn't even blog about it, as I don't want the secret to get out, but I'm so full and fat and sassy from my meal that here I am. :) The bread pudding is to-die-for. Mmm.

been obsessed lately

with the Napster-like file-sharing program, WinMX. WAY better than Kazaa or other file-sharing programs that contain spy-ware, corrupt files and lots of pop-up ads. This is just pure MP3 or video sharing. Silly me--I've been so excited for Vegas that you know that I've been looking for all the crazy versions of Viva Las Vegas! So far I have:

Elvis, of course
Bruce Springsteen
Dread Zeppelin
Dead Kennedys
Wayne Newton
ZZ Top
Blues Brothers
Englebert Humperdinck
Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash
Bob Dylan
Prince & Santana

I want to know why there aren't any chicks recording the song?!

trying out

the witch hazel that Ancarett recommended. We couldn't find the ointment anywhere but found instead the astringent, which looks like a bottle of alcohol, but has a strange flat plastic-y sort of smell to it. Dabbed it on a couple times yesterday...it's hard to tell, but I do think it might be working a bit. Joe seemed to think that the bruise on my knee and on my right foot weren't as bad as have been. My feet hurt more than yesterday though--not sure why. They are so bruised up, very deeply bruised. My elbow looks especially bad but it's turning yellow very quickly, so I have hopes that will be nearly gone by Thursday. I'm mostly worried about the very dark purple line that runs across the top of my ankle...right where the strap of my shoes will fall. I know that I'll look a wreck in shorts, but my main concern is being able to wear those shoes!!

3.21.2003

ok so i'm not a math major

but I know enough to realize that having 40 countries supporting the war is NOT very much. Guess what, monkey-man, that's nothing to brag about. There are 192 countries on the planet Earth. Only 20% support really doesn't sound very impressive if you want my humble opinion.

And WHO are those 40 countries anyway? No one ever says.

I think one thing that sits with me heavily is the fact that we say we are waging the war for peace. Yet we did it in such a way that we had blatant disregard for the opinions of many other world powers--we are the self-elected policemen of the world, ignoring the UN, ignoring the concerns of many nations (I mean hullo...ignoring 152 other countries!). What will the world think of us afterward? How much international strife will we have we left ourselves with? We have expressed to the world that we don't really give a rat's ass what they think, but instead will move through like the super-power we are, doing what we seem to think is fit. I don't really see that as a peaceful sort of action, but rather one that essentially says fuck-off, instead.

i find that

i'm unsure what to think about all this war stuff. Joe and I were talking about it at dinner tonight and it got me sad and angry. I am frustrated because I can't express my thoughts at work--my boss is a staunch Republican and he teases me all the time and I don't DARE do it back...definitely a bit of a "you traitor" thing when I do. I have to keep my mouth shut when people talk about not buying French wine (what a bunch of imbeciles...giving up bordeaux and champagne!) and yet they don't mention anything about the Russians, Germans or Chinese. I am worried about flying next week (and being stuck in lines at the airport for the extensive searches). I get angry when I think about the fact that I keep losing money in my 401k. I am sad that so many of the people I know are out of work. I hate the ongoing media frenzy---they love wars, love to report 24 hours, love showing pictures of nothing happening over the skies of Baghdad. I hate how insecure I sort of feel. I don't remember feeling like this during Desert Storm and I knew people who were over there. Older, wiser? I'm not so sure I want to be, sometimes.

inadvertantly

discovered through a link (sort of) at Seth Godin's site: Gourmet Governors. I wish more of our tax dollars were going toward something of this nature, hehe.

i am so clumsy

that I tripped from the top of the back stairwell stairs (#14 I counted this afternoon):

I went down on my knees, as though I were praying, all the way down, skidding from stair to stair on my shins and the tops of my feet. It's probably the only reason I didn't break anything--if I had rolled, I would have certainly hit my head or limbs numerous times, breaking something in the process. Now I just have goose eggs on my right foot and my right elbow. I am hobbling around although I hid it well at the sales meeting today, in which I had to stand and present for an hour and a half. I just hope that it's gone before I put my 4 inch heels (they are serious shoes!! but they look awesome!) on to walk down the aisle next week!

boston in mid-march

sigh. The Charles still frozen, threatening snow today.

This was taken from the car as we were speeding along Storrow drive (that's the MIT bridge) after picking out our wedding rings. Here's what the ring SORT of looks like...it's this style, but a thicker band and the diamonds aren't in a line, but staggered. Joe's is a simple band--no diamonds for my manly man!

Got my hair cut and colored...nearly everything is ready for the big day!

almost ready

to do Vegas! Here is the dress:

It has a black scarf that goes with it and I have some great shoes to match. It's tough to really see it here, unfortunately.

We're staying at the Venetian, have the Little Church of the West lined up, dinner reservations at Picasso, have tickets to see Mystere and have double massages scheduled at the Canyon Ranch Spa before the wedding.

I can't WAIT!

remember

M.A.S.H.? One of my colleagues in my cognitive psych class made one during an origami exercise we were doing last class and I thought it rather ironic when I came across this site tonight. My fortune?

You will live in Mansion.
You will drive a blue VW bug.
You will marry Joe and have 4 kids.
You will be a Poet in Seattle.

All of it is great EXCEPT the 4 kids!!!

finally!

i have a digital camera! As you can plainly see from the picture here.

And I have a wedding dress for Vegas--a slinky black and silver thing that Paulette helped me find (and in the end gifted me with!!! THANK YOU!!!). I find myself very worn out from the day though. All that shopping just plum wore me out!

i don't understand

why I can't see crocuses popping up, why the little buds on the trees haven't started to turn green. I can't understand the very heavy snow falling and the 100 car pile-up on Rt. 95. I'm really really really not looking forward to driving home this afternoon.

i lost 8 pounds this weekend!

yep, you heard me right--THIS WEEKEND. I weighed on Friday night at the gym and on Monday morning when I got up. 8 lbs down after a nasty nasty bout of what I thought was food poisoning. I was wrong though, it wasn't toxin by food, rather it was a repeat of a virus that I had earlier this winter. I was still rather weak when I went to work today but felt glad it was over...glad until Joe called me, his voice like a little kid's, telling me that he had been losing his guts all morning. Lovely. I get better and he gets sick. I made him hot jello and bought him gingerale and I wish wish wish I could fix him--he seems worse than I was and I felt pretty bad. I didn't get a fever until late evening though and he seems like he's had one all day. :(

The worst part is that we unwittingly exposed Paulette to it. I hope she doesn't go through the agony that we have been!!!

Anchorage

In my brother's toy army,
the men march in unison
with pointed guns, shiny,
black, flat and in symmetry.
Afloat on the lake is the boat
I made for him.
A craft fashioned
of thin reeds extracted
from my bones.
It floats quietly, almost
motionless; natural ammunition
stolen from the gutter,
now stored in its depths.
Cold alights like moths tearing
through woolen sleeves. Fallen—
the boat touches shore and I watch
the proud soldiers march
in silence through the weeds.
I stand on a fogged-in pier
where the boat I made for my brother
disappears in the water beyond.
