vulgarity

has a long history...in fact, this plate probably made by Italian Renaissance ceramicist Francesco Urbini in the 16th century makes it very clear. The head is framed by a garland carrying the inscription: Ogni homo me guarda come fosse una testa de cazi (Every man looks at me as if I were a dickhead)...

Don't get me started on medieval and Renaissance vulgarity -- it's everywhere and it is funny! People think that these ancient times were full of piety and innocence. Bwahahaha! If only! ;-)

Honestly... if you're into heraldry at all the ribald humour read in many blazons would crack up even the sternest.

I am recalling with giggles one BlackAdder Part the Second skit in which his incredibly pious relatives come to visit and all he has to offer in the way of a meal is an interestingly shaped turnip...
