mystery solved--sort of

That YM Magazine subscription? Apparently some company, MLI Inc. of Valdosta, GA is sending me a complimentary gift subscription...a thank you of some sort for purchasing a product or something along those lines. The thing is, I can't figure out who that company is--Google is sort of unclear and the names that do come up for MLI are entirely unfamiliar.

At any rate, they changed my subscription to Health , which I've been meaning to subscribe to anyway, so all is well in subscription land!

Grats on the gift subscription! Glad you were able to change it from YM. :)

Hey, I got the same postcard in the mail for this free YM subscription... Typed the company into Yahoo and the first match was to your website. I can't figure out where it came from either, and I don't think I've ordered anything recently... if you find more info on it let me know!

Posted by: Angie at March 7, 2004 05:38 PM

I also got the same free YM subscription and had your website show up when I typed in the MLI. If you find out any more info please let me know. I am glad to hear you can change the subscription.

I got one of those postcards today... mine just says a 'gift subscription' for YM was ordered for me. I called the toll-free number and asked to cancel it (I'm 19 and live in a dorm, so I don't read YM and I won't even be here for 2 years) but instead I ended up switching it to "Fitness" magazine at home. They said I could switch it to Fitness, Health or Sports something. Still don't know why I got it, though...

I also have recived a lil' card. It's awfully shady if you ask me.

Posted by: Sara at March 9, 2004 08:38 PM

I got this in the mail too...it's kind of odd...what's the connection here? what dumb thing have we all accidentally signed up for. The real strange thing is, when I do sign up for dumb things, I purposefully spell my name wrong so that I know it came from something dumb...and my name is spelled correctly on this. But good to know I can change it from YM...cause I am neither Young, nor Modern...
well ok..I'm modern...

I'm a 69-yr old male petroleum engineer and I also got a card. Mine was for a magazine called "Seed," which seems to be a "Popular Science" or "Scientific American" type of thing. Indeed, this particular card's name is styled the way, albeit not unique for my subscriptions, mine is on "Popular Science Magazine," which I've subscribed to since 1945. I also sometimes use different middle initials when signing up for various things so I can track related junk mail (e.g., Columbia Record Club from "Car & Track Magazine"), but I can't tell for sure this time.

Posted by: Irv at March 15, 2004 11:31 AM

I wonder what on earth we all have in common? The cards go to our home address so it must be something like a credit card, or a subscription we must already have. And it sounds like they sort of have an idea of the demographic, since you didn't receive Young Miss with the rest of us, Irv.

The woman who I talked to at the magazine company wouldn't say anymore other than it was a thank you from a company that I am already affiliated with.

Very weird. We'll see if that magazine ever shows up!

Posted by: crystal at March 15, 2004 03:08 PM

Weird. I recieved the same little postcard for a subsciption to YM. I goggled the name and came up here.

I'm thinking it has to be a credit card thing. I've never gotten more "junk" mail than recently when I signed up for a credit card. Mine's from Capitol One. Anyone else?

Posted by: Kelly at March 15, 2004 03:49 PM

Got one of those cards the other day. Mine is for "Parents" magazine. I also have Capital One credit cards. Seems shady to me too.

Posted by: Mary at March 15, 2004 07:28 PM

Hmmm I have a Capital One card too...except that I closed my account with them...

Posted by: crystal at March 15, 2004 07:33 PM

Yep - I got a card in the mail today - I don't have a Capital One card - I do, however, have a Bank One card, a Chase card and an MBNA card. I wonder what we all have in common? Might it be something like a store credit card from a women's clothing shop? That might explain the YM. It sure seems shady to me. If a company wanted to thank its customers, wouldn't it want to get credit? They must want you to call the number for some reason...

Seems like we all have been receiving these mysterious little gift subscriptions. I'm as confused as everyone else. Does anyone know what MLI inc does? Because I can't figure it out and the woman at the end of that 1-866 number couldn't tell me.

As for the credit card theory, I don't have any credit cards and yet received a properly named/addressed gift subscription, so I doubt that's the connection.

Posted by: Rachel at March 16, 2004 12:58 PM

The little gift card was sent to us so we would all meet here and try to guess why we received it. :) Oh well......it's pretty cool anyway! Free for 3 years, can't beat that! I thank who ever sent it!!!

Posted by: Pamela at March 16, 2004 03:03 PM

This is so weird that they wont tell anyone who its from. I got a card today for YM as well. I have a Capital One credit card too...but still, the card has "gift" and "no cost" in quotes...anyone find that sketchy? Has anyone made sure that they won't get billed eventually?

Posted by: Colleen at March 16, 2004 09:07 PM

Got one of those crazy cards...the lady from the 1-866 number wouldn't tell me anything just that it waas a gift, I'm very curious about this MLI company...If anyone has any information please email me at Ree9285@aol.com thanks so much!~!

Posted by: Miranda at March 18, 2004 10:59 AM

I don't have a capital one credit card....
I thought it was fishy that "gift" and "no cost" were in quotes too...but they don't have my credit card number already, so they can't auto-bill me...and I'm not gonna pay any bill they send me. Who knows....this is an interesting mystery...I sure am glad that crystallyn had it on here, so that I can feel a little less confused

Posted by: Carrie at March 20, 2004 11:02 PM

I received my YM in the mail yesterday. I assume it's just that I called too late for them to switch me to Health. But I did receive it!!

And damn it made me feel old to go through it...

Posted by: crystal at March 20, 2004 11:23 PM

I got a YM Magazine too. i'm too old to want it and as confused as all of you. I have gotten similar postcards the last few months saying "we're so glad we found you" but this is the first gift I've received. All the cards have different toll free numbers, but they are all postage paid in Ft. Lauderdale. This is kinda spooky. I have an MBNA credit card but not a Capital One. Thank you so much for havig this website. I'm glad to know I'm not alone!

Posted by: Abby at March 22, 2004 12:22 AM

I didn't expect somehow that the magazine would ever really COME. When you guys wrote that yours started arriving, I called to cancel - they didn't offer any substitute but they asked if I wanted to pass the subscription along to anyone else. This whole business is odd...

Posted by: LisaToc at March 22, 2004 11:05 AM

I got the same YM subscription..this is just really odd. What company would want to pay for free subscriptions of magazines and not want to get credit for it? I wonder how many people actually got these "gifts"...like tens or hundreds or thousands...

Posted by: Elizabeth at March 27, 2004 02:37 PM

I thought this whole thing was weird. I've gotten like three magazines over the past three weeks. I think I'm just going to cancel it because I'm 21 (and feel like a pedophile receiving a magazine with shirtless 13 year old boys), don't want it, and am afraid to transfer the subscription to another group (such as a youth center) because I'm scared they'll have to pay for something. I thought maybe it was something from an aunt of mine since she's the only person I know in Florida, but I guess not. I had just supposed that it was something she ordered from a person selling magazine subscriptions as a fundraiser, but I'm starting to wonder now. Too shady for me. Thanks for the info though.

Posted by: Renee at March 27, 2004 10:22 PM

Dude..I am enjoying my YM magazine...even though it isnt definitely i would buy myself...should I be worried?
Thing is..they sent it to my address which isnt on my credit card bill...so there is no way it can be affliated with that

Posted by: Sarah at March 29, 2004 02:45 AM

I got the same card, only mine was for Sporting News. It was also sent to an address where I haven't lived in nearly a year, although it was forwarded to me. I'm a little worried because when I lived at that address I was the victim of identity theft.

I have a theory I'd like to run by...well I guess we're considered a group now, so I'd like to run it by the group. Keep in mind it's just a theory.

The ML in MLI could stand for Multi-Level which basically indicates a pyramid scheme company. I don't know much about them save what I learned from an episode of Oprah that aired a year or two ago. I'm not sure how they got our names or who gave them out, but my suspicion is that after the three year free gift subscription is up, we'll be contacted about paying for a subscription, probably for an inflated price.

Could be a scam. Could be legit. The fact that the company won't be upfront with who/what they are is worrisome but I'm not going to stress about it.

Like I said. Theory. If anyone knows more about multi-level companies and pyramid schemes let me know.

It does seem kind of ridiculous, however, handing out 3 year gift subscriptions to teen magazines. Since the typical readership will outgrow the content in those three years. (I've already outgrown it but that's no nevermind as I'm a mag. design major and can write off the subscription as homework).

Posted by: Rachel at March 29, 2004 07:22 PM

I'd like to add to my previous comment that the ML in MLI may very well not stand for Multi-Level.

I, too, received a card saying I got a gift from MLI, Inc. of Valdosta, Georgia. Mine was Fitness. After searching, I thought it might be related to a model/actor search I participated in a while ago, since on my search I found one match in initials, Millie Lewis International, which is based in Georgia and has a location in Valdosta. They are promoting their upcoming competition to a lot of modeling and acting agencies, or so it appears from their website. But it just really stumped me. Does anyone else have any auditions in their past? How about online subscription to newsletters such as Travel Zoo, like me? Cuz my search turned up an airport code which corresponded to the initials. Those were my guesses. I want to find out where the heck they got my name!

Posted by: Margaret Oh at April 4, 2004 12:47 PM

I have *never* participated in any model or actor search...I don't have subscriptions to anyother magazines (anymore)....years ago I was given a subscription to Reader's Digest for Christmas...but that was at least 3 years ago...
If this *is* a pyramid scheme...it's not a very good one...

I can't believe I found this web site! I've been trying to figure this out for months! I got a postcard like this for "Child" magazine in December, and I thought it was a Christmas gift from a relative or something. I asked everyone I could think of and no one knew about it. I am a mom with a 20 month old little girl, so obviously MLI knows us very well. (What else do they know about me?) Anyway, I have received 4 magazines so far and no bill, so it appears legit.

(I do also have a Capital One card.)

The other day, I got another postcard for "Family Circle" I guess I'll have a lot of reading to do!

Posted by: Kim at April 12, 2004 03:33 PM

Too weird! I came online to figure out who purchased me a 3 year gift subscription to "Fitness" magazine...and I ended up finding this site. Kinda glad to find out that it wasn't purchased by one of my friends for me...thought maybe they were telling me something. Anyone else figure out where these are coming from? Very confused..

Posted by: Jessica at June 2, 2004 09:41 PM

I too received the gift subscription card. My teenage daughter loved the year subscription. When the year was up they sent a renewal card which I did not send back to renew. Since that time I no longer receive the magazine but have been receiving some very nasty collection letters. The latest from North Shore Agency, Inc., a National Collection Agency. The notice says that although they are a collection agency the letter is an opportunity letter. I can send $8.00 and have the opportunity to reinstate my subscription. I'm trying to figure out their scam. You can also go online to their website and pay the amount due. I plan on getting to the bottom of this. Does anyone have the MLI telephone number?

Posted by: Ellen at August 27, 2004 08:40 PM

There is definitely some sort of scam going on here...my daughter got a letter from the North Shore Agency, "A National Collection Agency" saying that she owes 12.00 for a subscription that she never subcribed to. I do know that she has signed up for some free stuff over the internet I think someone got the information and is running a scam. You can find more information about this at
