i have
this great recipe for Cathedral Windows, a chocolate, coconut concoction that uses colored marshmallows as the core of recipe. White ones wouldn't do it justice at all.
There is one problem I have found.
They don't seem to sell colored marshmallows in Boston!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that bizarre? I have been all over! They sell fancy shmancy ones at Whole Foods that cost $7.00 for ten of them, but no regular plain ol' little marshmallows. I don't understand. :(
I was wigging out because I can't find flavored oils either to make the hard candy recipe that my mom always made...I was even feeling a little sadness that eventually no one would probably be able to make it anymore because you can't get the oils (we always had to get them at a pharmacy or drug store, weird huh?). Then my mom pointed out that I could probably find them on the Internet. DUH! Here I am, with over 12 years of Internet under my belt and I don't even think of that.
Wilton's carries a small selection, but Happy Cooker carries every flavor you can imagine! Whew! I feel better now.
Let the candy making begin!

I know! I can't find them, either! I make those sometimes (so easy!), but we call 'em Stained Glass Window Panes, and I usually skip the coconut. So very good around the holidays!

If they melt in there, try pre-melting your marshmallows, then mixing in some food colouring. That's what we do to get festive green rice krispie squares.

No, unfortunately they don't melt, otherwise I would have gone that route. Pout.

Food colouring spray? I used it to make the marshmallow stems on my pumpkin cakes green.
I always had a prejudice against any other colours of marshmallow except the yellow & the pink ones.

Mike's grandmother makes these cookies, but also can't find colored marshmallows in New Jersey. Mike's mom specially ships them to her from Alabama, where you can find them in all the grocery stores. Who knew?

Yah...my mom is sending me some from Boise. Joe says that colored marshmallows must be white trash ghetto food. ;)

I can attest that he is right, and they are indeed white trash ghetto food. I've never been able to find 'em here, either; but when I went home for Thanksgiving they were readily available. Good thing, too--marshmallows are a key ingrediant in no fewer than 3 Thanksgiving goodies. :)

Crystal! I found them! The Johnny Foodmaster on Beacon St in Somerville has colored marshmallows! This only furthers the what-trash-ghetto theory -- this store specializes in over-processed, packaged food.
It is walking distance from our apartment (which is how I made it there today in the snow). If you want me to bring some over on Saturday I can!

obviously I meant to say "white-trash" not "what-trash" :)

My sister mentioned that my mom is sending me some, so don't worry about it. But it's funny, I told Joe that you had found some and he said, wait, let me guess...Johnny's Foodmaster? I said, Did you read my blog? He said no, I was just trying to think of the most ghetto grocery store I could think of!!
